Team Racing Summary March 2008

Despite a few cancelled events due to bad weather, the BAE Systems supported Wightlink/WightMountain Racing Team have managed some good results during March. Following their Team win and overall first place for Dave Dent in the Redhill 18 mile Time Trial at the end of February, the following week Dave went on to repeat his win of last year at the Banbury Star Hardriders 23 mile event in a time of 55.22 – just over a minute clear of 2nd placed Scott Rose of Wheelspin Cycles.

The following week, on the 9th March, Dave was joined by 4 of his team mates for the Team Axiom Hilly 30 mile Time Trial. Starting from Wickham, north of Fareham, the course follows an undulating course up to Bishops Waltham returning via Wickham to Southwick. Once again Wightlink/WightMountain RT took the Team win, with Dave taking 1st overall in a time of 1.10.01. Sean Williams was 4th overall with 1.14.21 and Martin Piper just 4 seconds behind in 5th place, then Greg Crosswell in 7th with 1.15.14 and Steve Taylor in 9th with 1.17.22.

Martin Greg & Steve had entered the Sotonia 10 on the following Saturday which was unfortunately cancelled due to persistent rain causing hazardous spray on the Dual Carriageway course. Dave Dent, preferring slightly longer events, had entered the Maidenhead Hilly 30 mile event on the Sunday. Despite persistent rain, wind and low temperatures, this event went ahead, although with over half of the field opting not to start on the day. Dave took 1st overall in 1.10.46 for the undulating course between Frieth, Stokenchurch, Henley & Marlow, just over one and a half minutes ahead of 2nd place.

The Easter Weekend, saw 5 of the team riders in the Bournemouth Arrow Good Friday 10 mile event at Poole. Strong winds meant this was not going to be a fast day, although Primera’s James Gilfillan produced a still impressive time of 21.58 to take 1st place. Dave Dent took 2nd place in 22.31, Sean Williams 7th in 23.33, Greg Crosswell 8th in 23.58, Martin Piper 12th in 24.10, and Steve Taylor 21st in 24.48.

Easter Sunday once again saw the A3CRG 10 mile event, which Greg had entered, cancelled due to the forecast rain & sleet. However the Bournemouth Jubilee Hilly 42km event, held on a circuit between Wool & Lulworth still went ahead – the rain making an appearance just before the start! The race was won by Nik Gardiner of John’s bikes in a time of 1.03.38, with Wightlink/WightMountain’s Dave Dent finishing once again in 2nd place - 32 seconds behind.
